As the historical heart of Kyoto, the former Imperial Palace was once encircled by the households of aristocrats and samurai, a legacy that still lingers today. The palace is now nestled within Kyoto Gyoen, a sprawling 160-acre park that bursts with blooming flowers year-round, making it the ideal spot for cycling. The tour will take you to Kujo Lake and Garden and the Kenrei Gate, and then northwards to the ancient Shinto site of Shimogamo Shrine. Finally, cycle back along the Kamo River, enjoying the refreshing breeze, stunning views of Kyoto’s architecture and wildlife, and a glimpse into the everyday life of the city’s residents.

Kyoto Gyoen National Garden
Cycle through the leafy Kyoto Gyoen National Garden, home to the Imperial Palace and several other historic sites. This sprawling green space is loved by locals, who visit to enjoy the changing seasons. See cherry blossoms in spring, yellow ginkgo tree leaves in fall, and a range of flora throughout the year.
-
Shimogamo Shrine
Older than the city itself, Shimogamo Shrine lies just north of the delta where the Kamo and Takano rivers meet. Said to be over 2000 years old, it is surrounded by the Tadasu Forest, giving it a sense of serenity within the bustling city.
-
Kamogawa Riverside Promenade
We round off the tour with a cycle on the Kamogawa riverside promenade. Kamogawa is a favorite local spot for strolling and picnicking and is great for cycling free of traffic. Look out for wild birds such as ducks, herons and black-headed gulls. Hop across the water on the Kamogawa 'stepping stones'.
